Business has joined Eco Island too!

In this section we have set out some of the many things the business community and trade unions tell us can be done to make our world and Island more sustainable.

Without a strong and prosperous economy, many of the priorities of Eco Island can't be achieved. A strong and thriving business sector that attracts investment and growth can also be a sustainable asset to the Islands communities and environment.

Business has a key role to play in carbon reduction, accounting for 40% of the UKs emissions.  The business sector is rapidly taking up this challenge by acting as a leader in sustainable development that is good for business and good for the community.  This is very important as business and employees a have a key role to play in building stable and safer communities through acting responsibly and supporting local communities and organisations with resources and expertise.

If you are an Island business or are considering investment here, check out our Eco Island page for business which you can find here.

Business can act now:

  • Use commercial recycling.
  • Encourage staff to volunteer in the local community.

  • Switch off at work – turn off photocopiers, printers, PC screens, lights.
  • Cut out wasteful packaging for your products.
  • Join a local car-share scheme.
  • Help to reduce sickness absence among employees.
  • Check out sustainability case studies and the experience of others.
  • Get updated on business and sustainability regulation.
  • Ensure that skills and knowledge are updated and improved to give employees and business a competitive advantage.
  • Are there advances in technology that can help you do your job better?
  • Help employees and colleagues who are new to the Island to settle into their community and job.

When even small businesses take local action, they can have a global impact.
