Eco Island is the Island’s Sustainable Community Strategy. It charts how the Island will achieve its goal of having the lowest carbon footprint in England by 2020. However, it is much more than just a “green” agenda – we cannot protect the beauty and quality of life of the Island without developing safer, stronger and healthier communities and a strong, innovative economy. The trick is balancing them all. Eco Island sets out how we will do that.
The Eco Island strategy was developed by the Island Strategic Partnership – why not take a few moments to look around the Eco Island website?
The conferences are offering an unprecedented opportunity for up to 250 managers across the whole ISP to meet, network and develop a shared understanding of Eco Island and their role in delivering that vision. Supported by the ISP (the leaders of the Island’s major employers and organisations), this will build partnership skills and awareness. Certificates for CPD can be provided on request.
Right across the UK, the lack of joint working at a local level has been one of the key reasons why there has been little progress in delivering sustainable economic, social and physical regeneration, or improved public services, that meet the needs of local communities. A combination of organisations, and the community, working co-operatively as part of the ISP will have a far greater chance of success. The Island offers the perfect place for this sort of local working, joining up to make the difference.
To achieve these improvements, the Government, the Isle of Wight Council, Hampshire Constabulary, the Island NHS, the Rural Community Council and the Island’s business community are working co-operatively, changing the ways we all work, reallocating resources and tailoring our “day job” work programmes to tackle issues that really matter to Island residents. That is what Eco Island sets out to do, to make measurable improvements by 2020.
Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Delegates will hear from the Island’s leaders in the morning, setting out the Eco Island vision, values and aspirations for the Isle of Wight. After a networking lunch, during which time there will be information stands available to provide explanations on different aspects of Eco Island, delegates will work in table groups, to develop a shared understanding of what partnership means for them on the Island and how it can be improved.
