The Learning and Skills Council and Eco Island.

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) is responsible for planning and funding high-quality education and training for young people aged over 16 and adults in England, the only exception being those studying in universities.

The LSC National Statement of Priorities ‘Better Skills, Better Jobs, Better Lives’ sets out our aim to raise the educational achievement of all children and young people, and to narrow the gap in achievement between children from low income families and their peers. For adults, the aim is to improve the skills of the population and deliver a world class skills base by 2020, improving the skills of those in work and importantly those currently not working and excluded from the labour market.

On the Isle of Wight we provide funding to a wide range of organisations, including the Isle of Wight College, the five schools sixth forms, the Isle of Wight Council for Adult and Community Learning, and a range of Work-Based Learning and private training provides. Last year this funding helped to support the education and training of approximately 3,000 young people and 4,500 adults on the Island.

The LSC will, through the funding it provides, make a contribution to the Eco Island vision in the following ways:

  • Helping people on the Isle of Wight to improve their skills will ensure that everyone can share in the Island’s future economic prosperity.
  • Ensuring that sustainability issues are fully considered in all applications for capital project funding. Colleges applying for capital grant support can now apply for up to a 10% uplift in net building costs for elements within the building that address sustainability issues.
  • When awarding grants through the European Social Fund we specifically assess the extent to which applications address sustainable development issues.
